The M.I.S. (Maintain(ing) Independence Safely) project is led by Dr. Larry Ganong (PI) with myself as a co-investigator. It is an ongoing study about the ways rural-dwelling older adults (age 75 and older) who live alone reach help quickly during household emergencies, and how they modify their behaviors to age in place safely. In 2011 Dr. Ganong and his team were awarded a $400,000 grant from the USDA to conduct a randomized controlled trial pilot-testing an intervention aimed at helping older adults make plans to MIS. The intervention involved using multiple segment vignettes to facilitate problem-solving and planning between the older adults and their chosen social network member. Preparations to submit a grant to the NIH for further testing of this intervention are currently underway.
